A Virginia Farm Winery
Tucked away in Barboursville, on Rte 641, between busy Rte 29 and scenic Rte 20 is Burnley Vineyards, the home of the Reeder family and one of the oldest wineries in the area.
After being in the military for many years, C.J. Reeder and family came to the Charlottesville area in 1976 and C.J. looked around for some land to grow grapes.
Helped in this by Gabriel Rausse he settled on a piece of land in Barboursville at just about the same time that the Barboursville winery was being planted, some of their stock graftings even came from Barboursville.
Planted in the spring of 1977 their first vintage was in the fall of 1984 and consisted of a Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon.
Their Tasting Room opened the following May, 1985 offering just these two wines.
The wines now produced number fifteen with their latest being Chambourcin, which is oak barrel aged for one year and is a dry but light to medium bodied red, beautifully smooth and fruity.
Growing Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Norton, Vidal Blanc, Cabernet Dora and Chambourcin the 32 acres of vineyards are able to produce enough grapes for all their wine.
Burnley Winery is a whole family affair from C.J. and wife Pat to son Lee and his wife Dawn.
Any day will find one or more of them in the Tasting Room and very willing to discuss their wines and the making of them.
Be sure to look for the four footed family members, Cooper the German Shepherd, now getting a little stiff in his joints; has his own debut wine “Dog Gone Red”, and the family baby, Alice, a soft and bouncy Sheepadoodle.
The winery is open daily from April through December from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and January through March, Friday through Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Tours can be arranged and a separate Banquet Room is available for parties and events. Large tasting groups can also be accommodated in the Banquet Room.
A two bedroom, one bath cottage is available for rent in the grounds, it has a sitting area and a large kitchen. Just bring the groceries and the wine shop is right next door
At Uphill House we are delighted to be able to offer you a glass of Burnley wine as we serve our wine and cheese plate in the afternoon.
